Kitsap Physical Therapy and Sports Clinics

Joseph Pilates is the name of an individual who over 60 years ago recognized that core body strength is the foundation of all movement. He developed over 500 exercises that can be used to develop individualized exercise programs. People suffering from chronic back pain have benefited from finding their core and focusing on the specific development of the deep, internal muscles of the abdomen, back and pelvis that surround and support the spine. When the core muscles are strong and doing their job, as they are trained to do in Pilates, they work in tandem with the more superficial muscles of the trunk and hips to support the spine and movement. The spine has distinct curves and are balanced relative to one another to provide enhanced movements of the spine and shock absorption. One of the goals of Pilates is to help facilitate the potential range in each segment of the spine in a symmetrical manner to provide core and spinal stabilization. Athletes have found that core strengthening and stabilization improves their level of performance. Each exercise is built around the concept of muscle control.
