The McKenzie Method® of treatment is a mechanical treatment approach that is trusted and has been used by practitioners and patients worldwide for more than 40 years. This method is intended for all musculoskeletal problems, including pain in the back, neck, and extremities (i.e., shoulder, knee, ankle, etc.), as well as issues associated with sciatica, sacroiliac joint pain, arthritis, degenerative disc disease, muscle spasms and intermittent numbness in hands or feet. This approach utilizes a comprehensive, logical step-by-step assessment to evaluate the patient’s problem and then develop an appropriate treatment approach. Research has shown McKenzie assessment procedures to be as reliable as much more expensive & time-consuming diagnostic tests.Take control of your pain, empower yourself and get back to the life you love with the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy®!
The McKenzie treatment approach stresses a belief of active patient involvement, as well as patient education. By empowering the patient with crucial knowledge, they are able to self-manage their symptoms, which reduces dependency on medical intervention. The McKenzie approach promotes the body’s potential to heal without medication, passive modalities, needles, surgery, or a force applied by the practitioner. It also addresses the growing demand from patients and third-party payers for professional rehabilitation services that develop the patient’s self-treatment skills in a more cost-effective and time-effective manner.
Also known as Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), what sets The McKenzie Method apart from other physical therapy techniques is our innovative assessment process – a safe, reliable means to accurately reach a mechanical diagnosis and only then create the appropriate treatment plan. The step-by-step framework and problem-solving algorithm allow you to know right away if the method will work for your patient, eliminating the need for expensive, time-consuming tests and further evaluation.McKenzie MDT is widely recommended as the first treatment option for neck and back conditions worldwide.
The McKenzie Method: Three Steps To Success
STEP 1: Assessment
Unique to the McKenzie Method is a comprehensive and logical step-by-step process to evaluate the patient’s problem quickly. This mechanical examination can “classify” most patient conditions by the intensity and location of pain, as well as movement restriction patterns.
STEP 2: Treatment
Each patient is prescribed a series of individualized exercises. The emphasis is on active patient involvement, which minimizes the number of visits to the clinic.
Ultimately, most patients can successfully treat themselves when provided the necessary knowledge and tools. Patients with more difficult mechanical problems may require initial treatment with advanced, hands-on techniques by a McKenzie trained clinician until they are able to self-treat.
STEP 3: Prevention
By learning how to self-treat the current problem, patients gain hands-on knowledge on how to minimize the risk of recurrence as well as how to rapidly deal with recurrence if it does occur.
