Professional Interests:
Over the past few years of physical therapy practice, Elias has gravitated toward a further interest in spine care. His background in education from the North American Institute of Orthopedic Manual Therapy (NAIOMT) helped to develop his hands-on skills. He followed that with an educational certification from the McKenzie Institute which taught him a means of diagnosing and treating patients that is very much focused on patient independence. More recently he has begun studying the biomechanics of scoliosis and treatment based on the Schroth method. In addition to spine pain, he has an interest in chronic pain. He participated in course work from the International Spine and Pain Institute (ISPI) which revolutionized his understanding of pain processing and treatment for chronic pain conditions. This has been some of the most applicable course work he has participated in as it applies to all pain, even though the application is more focused on chronic problems.

Extracurricular Interests/Hobbies:
Elias enjoys boating and camping in the summer with his family (wife and 5 children). He is also working with his family on building a small scale farm and growing a small orchard with about 20 fruit trees. When he does come by some free time, which is rare, he tries to expand his woodworking skills.

Why did you choose to be an OT?
I’ve always had a passion for health and wellbeing, but occupational therapy emphasized the seemingly little things that made a big difference to quality of life—Like your ability to go to work, fix yourself a meal, or care for your family. Being an OT grants me the opportunity to assess how a person’s situation, values, and beliefs contribute to a patient’s health, which ultimately helps me determine how to best empower them to accomplish what matters most in their life.

What is your favorite part of being an OT?

My favorite part of being an OT is that every day is different with many opportunities to expand my perspective. I’m continuously learning about the things I love; the body and its function, the mind and how we’re motivated, and how the stories we tell ourselves affect our outcomes and engagement with the people and environment around us.
